Report on DSpace IR Workshop, Bangalore, India January 19, 2010
Inaugural event organized by the Library and Information Centre, BNMIT.

Bangalore, India On January 9, 2010 a National Workshop entitled "Design and Organization of Institutional Repositories (IR) Using DSpace (1.5.2)" was organized by the Library and Information Centre, B. N. M. Institution of Technology, Bangalore, India.
More than 180 delegates from across India were in attendance with 110 participants from VTU affiliated engineering colleges. The Inaugural function included a welcome address by Dr. K. Udayakumar, Principal, BNMIT. The program was formally inaugurated as Prof. Balaji, Registrar, VTU, Dr. I. K. Ravichandra Rao, Professor, DRTC, ISI, Prof. B. C. Rajanna, Chairman, BNMIE, and Sri. Narayana Rao Maanay, Secretary of BNMIE lit a lamp.
R. M. Puttaswamy, Librarian, BNMIT and Organising Secretary, presented a brief note on the workshop. Dr. I. K. R. was lauded by the management of BNMIE. Dr. I. K. R. delivered keynote address on the importance of IR, Issues, Challenges and he emphasized on the OAI and Metadata Harvesting. His remarks included comments on the digital revolution, as well as observations on the advantages and objectives of IRs. He pointed out that students can make use of IRs to meet learning objectives. He discussed content and management in terms of written policy on development of IRs and indexing IR content.
Another guest Dr. K. V. A. Balaji, Registrar, VTU, spoke on the strengths of Visvesvaraya Technological University in terms of numbers of colleges, and numbers of UG, PG and Research Programs. He has appreciated the development of libraries for knowledge creation and dissemination. He also assured the audience that the university will provide any kind of support to interlink IRs developed by colleges with VTU research portal. Elaborating further, he mentioned that libraries will attract young people and help to optimize available resources.
Sri. Narayana Rao Maanay has released a DVD of the workshop. Prof. B. C. Rajanna delivered Presidential Remarks and pointed out that libraries are being transformed from traditional to virtual form. Prof. T. J. Rama Murthy, Director, BNMIE proposed a vote of thanks.
Dr. M. Krishna Murthy, Faculty, DRTC was the resource person for the technical session; he delivered an overview of institutional repositories, "A present scenario & IR Open Access, Archives, OAI-PMH working principles." After the first technical session, Sri. R.M. Putta Swamy, briefed the group on the Institutional Repositories maintained at BNMIT Library using DSpace. This interactive session provided delegates with tips and ideas on the design and organization of IRs.
Participants then attended a hands-on session on installing Fedora 9 (a Linux-based operating system). After lunch a brainstorming, hands-on training session on DSpace 1.5.2 was held where DSpace was successfully installed.
Sri. Choudappa N., President, AKELPA congratulated the engineering college librarians who recently were awarded Ph.D. degrees. They are, Dr. Dinesh K. S., who completed his Ph.D. degree under the supervision of Dr. Khaiser Nikam, UOM, Dr. K. R. Mulla under the supervision of Dr. Chandrashekar M., UOM and Dr. H. M. Chidananda Swamy under the guidance of Dr. B.U. Kannappanavar, Kuvempu University.
The concluding session began with a welcome speech by Dr. K. Ranga, Dean, BNMIT. Sri. R.M. Putta Swamy, who presented a detailed report on the workshop. Sri. P.S. Manjunatha, Librarian, MBA library introduced the Chief Guest Dr. M. Krishna Murthy.
Dr. Krishna Murthy spoke about the advantages of using DSpace for colleges, and reminded the audience that this was the first workshop on DSpace 1.5.2 held in India. Sri. Maanay delivered presidential remarks and expressed his satisfaction over the turnout. He suggested that the workshop marked a benchmark for the institution and opined that it is necessary to equip oneself to serve in libraries in order to meet future challenges with advent of ICTs. Dr. Shana D. Gowda, Professor, concluded with vote of thanks.
