Cross Repository Search Service
National Institute of Informatics (NII) launched the Japanese Institutional Repository Online (JAIRO) as a test service on October 22nd, 2008. JAIRO provides an opportunity of cross-searching academic information stored in Japanese IRs including journals, theses, desertations, departmental research bulletins, research reports and many others. As of October 2008, JAIRO had about 540,000 searchable contents in 84 IRs. " We wish JAIRO shows the present and the future, be the gyrocompass, of the Japanese IRs", says JAIRO's staff. The O'Reilly Tools of Change for Publishing Conference, happening February 9-11, 2009 at the Marriott Marquis Times Square, in New York will explore these and other emerging trends around digital publishing, including:

  • Ebooks
  • Digital Printing
  • Alternative business models for paid content - both online and in print
  • Content for mobile/smart phones
  • Web-based marketing and promotion
  • New digital publishing and authoring tools
  • Managing the human side of change and innovation
  • Case studies of successful (or unsuccessful!) new publishing initiatives
  • Riding the wave instead of fighting the tide, such as using file-sharing sites to increase sales
  • Strategies and tactics for effectively using print-on-demand
  • Moving beyond books: selling merchandise, community, experience, and other scarce goods in a world of "free"
  • Strategies and tactics for incorporating ebooks into your publishing program
  • Tools and challenges for an efficient all-digital workflow
  • Revising your P&Ls for the economics of digital publishing
  • Understanding and responding to the changing retail landscape

The third annual TOC Conference will also focus on industry-wide strategic issues, like the changing retail and supply-chain landscape. In addition to "long-view" trends (what does the fact that there currently 448 sites for buying mobile ebooks in Japan alone mean for US publishers?), we'll be supplying practical tales from the trenches from those who are already experimenting and innovating on the digital frontier of paid content.

Registration for TOC 2009 will open in late October. Sign up for the conference newsletter to be notified when registration opens.
