By now, many of you should have received information in the mail about becoming a sponsor of DSpace Foundation. The sponsorship program is one component in our strategy for the foundation to become self-sustaining over time. In addition, the foundation also plans to offer services to the DSpace community, as well as secure corporate support and grant funding for our projects. The details of the sponsorship program and current initiatives can be found on the website. We appreciate your consideration and support as you review the material and speak with your organizations about participating in the program. DSpace Introduction Video Now Available |
DSpace, with the help and support of the service provider, @mire, has developed a brief "Introduction to DSpace" video. The video explains repository software basics and demonstrates a few of the key features of the DSpace platform. Click here, to check it out. |

DSpace / Fedora Collaboration Meetings |
DSpace and Fedora will be hosting a joint panel at DLF on Thursday November 14, at 4pm. Both organizations will also be hosting a joint meeting at SPARC on Wednesday Nov 19th, 5:30pm. We invite you to attend either meeting if possible to hear updates on joint projects and how you can participate. Update on 2.0 Work Plan Meeting |
The DSpace 2.0 development team held a meeting in early October to discuss the work schedule for the fall. The meeting reviewed suggestions for alternative service frameworks, ultimately settling on Spring and Guice. The team also clarified the core services, and the data model. This resulted in a work list and timeline that can be seen and tracked on the DSpace 2.0 Jira. The team is currently working forward toward three milestones, all of which relate to the core services and model functionality of DSpace 2.0:
1) an initial assembly, labeled "Beta", targeted for mid November, 2) a first release candidate, "RC1", slated for the end of 2008, and 3) a second release candidate, "RC2", slated for the end of January, 2009. |

Feature / Issue Tracker (Jira) Launches for 2.0 Work |
The DSpace community is now using Jira to track, prioritize and guide its work. In addition to the DSpace platform work, Jira also allows the community to watch specific issues - receive updates when there are changes - as well as vote on an issue's relevance. Although there are no guarantees when a specific item will be addressed, the community can build a consensus on items captured in Jira and it will enhance the visibility of that issue. Jira also allows developers to create hierarchal tasks, vary the privilege levels and create a variety of status reports. Community members are encouraged to create Jira accounts, comment on issues and participate in the steering process. Jira participants can also subscribe to feeds, if they are interested in tracking activity. |

Update on DSpace Global Outreach Committee |
The DSpace Global Outreach Committee is underway. The committee's first priority was soliciting agenda items and participants for a repository manager meeting after the SPARC Digital Repositories Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland later this month. Several members from the committee will be facilitating the meeting. For more information on the meeting please see the link below.

 DSpace Repository Manager Meeting |
The DSpace Global Outreach Committee and DSpace Foundation are hosting a DSpace Repository Manager Meeting on November 19, from 8:30am-12pm at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland. The meeting will follow the SPARC Digital Repositories 2008 Meeting on November 17-18 and is open to anyone in the DSpace community. The agenda includes: 1) Manakin Session , 2) Community Development Requirement Discussion, 3) Various topics in a Bird of a Feather format.
