| DSpace / Fedora Collaboration Update |
Join Michele Kimpton, Executive Director, DSpace Foundation, and Sandy Payette, Executive Director Fedora Commons for the 60-minute webinar "All About Repositories: DSpace and Fedora: A Collaboration Update" on Wednesday, February 18 at 9am PST/12pm EST. The webinar will focus on the multiple dimensions of the dynamic collaboration between two of the largest providers of open source software for managing and providing access to digital content. Both DSpace Foundation and Fedora Commons came together in 2008 to work on joint initiatives that would better serve both open source repository communities. Several directions have emerged, including working together to improve interoperability of the software, forming joint collaborations with other organizations that offer value to both communities, and developing joint programs for advocacy, education and outreach. In addition, Fedora Commons and the DSpace Foundation are collaborating to investigate the prospect of jointly developing new technologies and to that end the organizations received a grant from the Mellon Foundation to design "DuraSpace", a service that will allow users to replicate and access their digital content in the cloud. Pre-registration is required for the webinar at http://www.education-webevents.com/. For more information about the collaboration, please visit the DSpace/Fedora Collaboration wiki and the joint project wiki. top |

| Ensuring Your Instance Is Indexed |
By Robert Tansley, Google Engineer and Architect of DSpace 1.0 Anyone who has analyzed traffic to their DSpace site (e.g. using Google Analytics) will notice that a significant (and in many cases a majority) of visitors arrive via a search engine such as Google or Yahoo. Hence, to help maximize the impact of content and thus encourage further deposits, it's important to ensure that your DSpace instance is indexed effectively. Here is how. -DSpace 1.5 and 1.5.1 ship with a bad robots.txt. Remove the
line that reads Disallow: /browse. If you do not, your site will not be correctly indexed.
-Upgrade to the latest possible DSpace.
-Ensure that your DSpace is visible to search engines.
-Use the simple HTML sitemap feature -- this does not require e.g. registering with Google Webmaster tools.
-Ensure your robots.txt allows access to item "splash" pages and full text.
-Ensure item metadata appears in HTML headers correctly.
-Don't worry about OAI-PMH; it is not particularly useful for indexing. Really.
For more detail, please visit the DSpace wiki on Ensuring Your Instance is Indexed. top

| 1.5.2 Update |
The DSpace committers and contributors are working towards a code freeze for 1.5.2 at the end of February. They are currently reviewing the patch queue in both SourceForge and Jira to determine which items can be included in 1.5.2. The Foundation will be copying patches and feature requests for DSpace 1.5.x from SourceForge patches to the live Jira patch queue list. If you have any patches that you would like to see included in 1.5.2, but that are not yet in either of the patch queues, please be sure to get them into Jira as soon as possible. The community is also encouraged to vote on any patches or feature request. Jira provides a way not only to vote on items, but allows you to request updates on specific items. top

| 2.0 Update |
The 2.0 development continues and work to port the XMLUI and JSP user interfaces to the 2.0 core is nearly complete. As a result, customizations via modifications to user interfaces will continue to be possible in 2.0. The initial 2.0 beta release is still scheduled for late spring and although a 2.0 end user version will likely not be available for some time, the committers and contributors will be working with a number of institutions during the beta phase. The DSpace 2.0 work can be followed on the wiki and on the DSpace Jira , where you can submit issues and vote on their priority. top |
| DSpace Global Outreach Committee Update |
The DSpace Global Outreach Committee has finalized their projects for 2009: 1) Help organize the DSUG Meetings at OR2009 in May 2009 and DSUG stand alone mtg in Sweden in October 2009. 2) Create a social network for the DSpace user community searchable by area of interest or expertise. 3) Survey the DSpace user community and make all information available to the community through a dynamic database which can be queried and updated easily by users going forward. 4) Create a list of projects/integrations/addons available for the DSpace platform. 5) Recruit and organize a list of regional contacts for potential / new users who want to talk to someone local. You do not need to be a part of the DGOC to help with any of the above projects. For example, maybe you are aware of some DSpace addons that are used at your institution or perhaps you would like to be one of the regional contacts for potential/new DSpace users. If you would like to get involved in any way, please contact Valorie Hollister at
